Proposed Constitutional Reform

This email is making the rounds. For a Government which believes in tightening the belt (again) I think there’s some worthy points here. If there’s some fat cutting to be done, I reckon most Aussies know where the most fat is.

I’ve taken the liberty to make a small change * to point (4); I believe for some time now politician pay has been set by an “independent Tribunal” or some such. Members of the tribunal are of course elected by parliament.

(PROPOSED)  CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM ACT OF 2014

IT IS A  PRIVILEGE TO SERVE IN AN AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT,  NOT A PATHWAY TO A GOLD PLATED PENSION  PLAN.
It has to stop  somewhere.

This is one idea that really should be passed around

(proposed) Constitutional Reform Act of 2014.

1. For politicians, tenure by election & npension.
politician collects a substantial salary while in office and so should receive no pay when they’re out of office.

2. Politicians (past, present & future) participate in their own Superannuation scheme as do all other Australians theSuperannuation Guarantee Administration Act 1992  (SGAA).
All funds in the  Politician’s retirement fund move to the  Centrelink system immediately. Politicians contribute to their superannuation the same way  as ‘ordinary’ Australian people. Contributions may not be used for any  purpose other than those available to every Australian.

3. Politicians can purchase their own retirement plan, just as most other working Australians are expected to do.

4. Politicians will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%. (* suggest pay be indexed to median, NOT average wage).

5. Politicians lose their current health care system and participate in the same health care system as the Australian people. ie either pay for private cover or Medicare.

6. Politicians must equally abide by all laws they impose on the Australian people.

7.  All contracts with past and present
politicians are void, effective 31/12/14. The Australian people did not agree to the perks with politicians.
Politicians made al
l these contracts for themselves. No entity holds  them  accountable.

Back in the sixties, a brand new comedian by the name of Paul Hogan was asked about politicians pay rises. Hogan -being a comedian- said “I reckon we should offer more money! Maybe then we’ll attract a better class of people” (or words to that effect).

I would suggest this experiment has been done to death over the last few decades, and proven to be a FAILURE.

High time we started electing representatives on the basis of Patriotism, empathy and selflessness, instead of love of money.

Aristocracies form when tribal leaders realise they have more in common with other tribal leaders than they do with members of their own tribe. Our representatives have become a “peerage”; more interested in looking after their peers than ordinary Australians.

They have forgotten they are supposed to be Representative.
